Assets and concepts of a world that you can explore alongside your character. Some scenes allow omnidirectinal movement with dynamically changing camera angles while others are designed to work from an restricted angle. Characters ranges from 2d sprites to fully rigged 3d models.

Best Fiends Rivals Seriously Digital Entertainment Ltd.

Most of the enviroments in the Best Fiends games are modeled and animated 3D scenes. Going for drawn look I frequently started by painting out the scenery which was then projected to 3d gemetry used as a basis for the model.

Test of a prerendered Best Fiends Rivals enviroment. This gave me an opportunity to try out Cycles rendering workflow in Blender. The character is from another artist.

Screenshot from a 3D adventure prototype which I also programmed. The game blends shaded 3d objects like characters with unlit prepainted elements. The style allows the game world look close to the initial sketches (right).

Best Fiends Seriously Digital Entertainment Ltd.

World map for the original Best Fiends. The cyclindar world effect was made by wrapping the geometry around a curve in Blender. In later Best Fiends games similar distortions effects would be handled by using shader effects.

Orinally Best Fiends was going to use static 2d backrounds for the gameplay screen. I made a system for a 3D ride that the player can progress through as they defeat the enemies. Tricks like placing alpha object to mask hard intersections of different texture surfaces and making sure that props were only placed in positions to fit the overall lighting of the scenery were necessary to maintain a painterly look in a 3d setting.

Best Fiends first year special event map backgrounds. The Chinese New Year one was fully modeled and animated with characters, camera flythroughs and support for gyroscope tilting. Other were simpler 2d backgrounds.
